Ankle Pumps

After an injury or surgery, it is very common to have swelling and edema in the knee. To help control the swelling and prevent a serious complication called a deep vein thrombosis from forming in your calf, it is imperative to perform ankle pumps once every hour. Ankle pumps will contract and relax your calf muscle, keeping blood flowing in the veins and arteries and helping decrease swelling in the knee. To perform this exercise:
  1. Simply lie on your back or sit with your feet out
  2. Point your toes down
  3. Then back up again
